Ghana Visa on Arrival: Who Qualifies and How It Actually Works

Short answer

Ghana visa on arrival is not a general option for tourists. It is granted case by case, mostly to travellers from countries with no Ghanaian mission, to delegates of approved conferences and events, and to some business visitors whose host applies in advance. Everyone else should apply before flying.

Who usually qualifies

• Nationals of ECOWAS member states, who need no visa at all for stays up to 90 days.
• Travellers from countries where Ghana has no embassy or consulate, with prior clearance.
• Delegates attending a conference or event whose organiser has filed a list with Ghana Immigration Service.
• Business travellers with an emergency entry request filed by a Ghanaian host company.

What you need at the airport

• A passport valid for at least six months beyond your arrival date.
• A return or onward ticket.
• Proof of where you are staying — a hotel booking or a host letter with an address and phone number.
• The approval letter or reference number, if your visa on arrival was pre-arranged.
• A card for the fee. Amounts change; budget the equivalent of USD 150 for a single entry and carry a backup payment method.

Yellow fever is not optional

A yellow fever vaccination certificate is checked at Kotoka International Airport before immigration. Without it you can be vaccinated at the airport at your own cost, or refused entry. Get it at home, at least ten days before you fly.

The safer route

Apply for an e-visa or a visa at a Ghanaian mission before you travel. It costs less, it takes the uncertainty out of your arrival, and airlines occasionally refuse boarding to passengers relying on an unconfirmed visa on arrival.

• Check your passport expiry today, not the week before.
• Book the yellow fever jab early.
• Save your accommodation address on your phone — the arrival card asks for it.
• Bring a printed copy of your ticket and booking.
