Detty December in Ghana: What It Costs and How to Plan It — Cadabra Tours travel blog

A practical guide to Detty December in Accra — when to book flights and hotels, what events run through the season, real budget ranges and how to avoid the December squeeze.

What Detty December actually is

December in Accra is a month-long season of concerts, beach parties, art fairs, weddings and homecomings. Flights fill, hotel rates climb and the city runs late every night. It is the single busiest travel month in Ghana.

Book earlier than you think

  • Flights: book by August or early September. Fares from the US, UK and Europe roughly double by late October.
  • Hotels and apartments: the good ones in Osu, Labone, Airport Residential and Cantonments are gone by October.
  • Airport transfers and drivers: book with your accommodation. Ride-hailing surges badly on event nights.

What happens through the month

  • Early December: art and design fairs, restaurant pop-ups, a calmer week for sightseeing.
  • Mid December: the concert season starts, beach days pick up, Afro Nation and festival weeks land here.
  • 24 to 26 December: family days, quieter city, best time for Cape Coast or Ada.
  • 27 to 31 December: peak week — the biggest concerts, the busiest beaches, New Year crossover services and parties.

A realistic daily budget

These are per-person figures for a two-week Accra trip in December, excluding flights. Prices jump in peak week, so treat the upper end as the 27–31 December window.

| Category | Typical daily spend | Notes |

|---|---|---|

| Accommodation | $50–$150+ | Decent rooms or apartments in safe neighbourhoods like Osu, Labone, Airport Residential and Cantonments. Book by October or expect the top of the range. |

| Transportation | $20–$50 | Hailing apps surge during Detty December because demand is high. Budget more if you are crossing the city for several events in one day. |

| Food | $5–$50+ | High-end restaurants charge international prices, but there are affordable joints serving both local and continental dishes. Mix the two and you can eat well without overspending. |

| Recreation & entertainment | $30–$200+ | Event tickets range from a few hundred cedis for day parties to several thousand for tables at the biggest shows. Pick a few headline events, then balance them with local spots like Republic Bar and Grill in Osu for a taste of what Accra locals actually do. |

Plan a break out of the city

Accra is intense in December. Most travellers we host add two or three nights away — Ada Foah on the estuary, the Cape Coast castles and Kakum, or the Volta lake and waterfalls. Going mid-month, before the 27th, means you get the quiet version of those places and are back for peak week.

What we handle

Airport pickup, a driver who knows the December traffic, accommodation held early at fair rates, day trips out of the city and help with event logistics. Tell us your arrival date and what you want the trip to feel like, and we will build it around your budget.
