Cape Coast and Kakum in 3 Days: A Realistic Itinerary
A tested 3-day route from Accra covering Cape Coast Castle, Elmina, the Kakum canopy walkway and where to eat along the way.
Three days is enough to see Ghana's central region properly if you plan the driving well. Here is the route we run most often.
Day 1 — Accra to Cape Coast
Leave Accra early to beat traffic. Stop at Kakum on the way if you want the canopy walkway before the afternoon crowds, otherwise head straight to the coast and check in for sunset.
Day 2 — Cape Coast Castle and Elmina
A guided morning at Cape Coast Castle is heavy but essential. After lunch, Elmina Castle and the fishing harbour give you a completely different view of the same coastline.
Day 3 — Kakum and the drive back
An early canopy walk is cooler, quieter and better for photos. You will be back in Accra by mid-afternoon.
Practical notes
Bring cash for local guides, comfortable shoes for the canopy walkway, and expect the drive between Accra and Cape Coast to take three to four hours each way.
